Modern : So I have an idea.

You can look at the rollers and see if they need to be replaced. They develop a flat spot.

Stats : 11 Replies

Brand New Sheneke MS-80 having problems.

Modern : Brand New Sheneke MS-80 having problems.

Sorry...but it is Chinese. Their 4-strokes are allegedly based on the old Honda GY6- but the quality range runs so erratic, I'm surprised that Sachs has their new MadAss made there.

I blew past some poor guy in a VIP Racing scoot last Friday night on the Di Blasi...as the "flying chainsaw" ripped past, you should have seen the dirty look he gave me. And that poor excuse of a "Racing Bike" was barely struggling on the flat part of Manchester in Warson Woods.

(My next scoot WILL be a
real
scoot!)

Stats : 11 Replies

Modern : Scooter is slow and weak, need advice

Valimagdon wrote:

Didja get oil on your belt? How did you get 2T in your tranny?

Unfortunately, it's a chain drive - oh well, can't have it all.
The rear-end was full of 80w90 - about 2-cups drained out of the fill-level bolt.
Well over 1 quart total came out. Why do people do stupid things like that?
It should've only had 24-oz. of 10w30 - not full to the top and not gear oil......
I'm kinda wondering what if any damage that might have done...

Stats : 4 Replies
No, that was an exhaust mount on the engine case that snapped off. I've never had a problem
installing
rollers/belts/flywheels.

Hey Myke, you say you never had a problem with rollers/belts/flywheels, then tell a story about when you did have a problem. Kind of conflicting statements, wouldn't you say?

No. I've never had a problem
installing
rollers/belts/flywheels.
We broke that variator fan while trying to
remove
it.

I see now. Let's hope that you never have to remove one again before you install a new one. Maybe Carver can take them off for you?

Thanks, but no, I'm good. This was many many many moons ago, before I really knew much about wrenching at all. Things have gotten much better since then.
Anyway, it was my buddy's idea, since it worked when he dissassembled his Metropolitan, and we didn't have the proper flywheel puller, and it was 3am and we weren't gonna be able to work on it again for another couple weeks.
Moral of the story: Use appropriate tools.

Stats : 9 Replies

My friend who also has a blue Passport was thinking about the kit too. However, from what I've read/heard, they really affect your fuel economy, like worse than a stock 90cc engine. Are you on the Passport owners group on Yahoo groups, Tim? That's where I've gotten most of my info on Passport kits.

Yeah I am going to re-read the yahoo group info. I seem to remember some other problems now that I think of it.

Stats : 9 Replies
I was thinking more along the lines of putting a strip above or below the head light on the front....maybe like 12 red led lights in a line as then put it on a delay similar to Christmas lights so one lights up right after the other, when it reaches the end it would repeat the process in reverse.....idk I did down load and save the pdf very interesting read!

Have had REALLY Bad experence with ETS...though....not holding it against them.

Stats : 4 Replies

Buddy maintenance and costs Report

Modern : Buddy maintenance and costs Report

jgr wrote:

the article or post you made. I realize all speedos are off but not by 18%. My experience has been with automobile speedos, they must be different, every time I would change tires on my jeep, I would run up to Watson Road speedometer shop, we would change a gear down by the transmission and change gears till we had the correct gear.

But since your post did not mention the odometer was correct I thought you may have over looked what might be effected. From reading your review I found it shocking to be that far off, but it is also shocking that the scooter spent about 20%+ of the year in the shop but I have heard of worse...

jgr

yeah, my bad on that... I keep forgetting that swapping speedo gears is something that most people can actually have done!

In my lifetime, I think I've only ownd 3 cars that had a transmission-driven speedometer cable! (the 99, the '87 camper, and the '58 Plymouth) All those old VW's are driven from the front wheel hub grease cap! So if you put the wrong size tires on (and almost every old VW does) you're hosed. And most people don't realize it. I don't know how many times I've talked to split-window bus guys who swear they can drive 75mph down the highway. yeah...riiightt... How you liking those teeny tiny radial car tires on your van dude?

And yeah, 18% is HUGE. I think almost all vehicles are aound 5% optimistic.. Motorcycles often seem more-so, usually in the 7-8% range... Buddys OTOH are generally being found to be about 10-12% off frequently. (I think Diane's is about in that range, figuring by just calling out speeds to each other when riding) Like I said, mine is the worst I've ever seen reported. I've never bothered to request that it be swapped under warranty though, since any replacement is likely to be grossly off as well.

Stats : 12 Replies

Calling Matthew: J Costa Variator on Piaggio Quasar engine

Modern : Calling Matthew: J Costa Variator on Piaggio Quasar engine

jgr wrote:

SubSeven wrote:

JCosta is the best IMO, but it depends on what you want.

Since my riding is urban, I care more about 0-50, than 30-70 so I'm happy with the Costa too.

I'm confused... Seems both you and Matthew like the Costa... When anyone post a write up or information you must consider the source... Modern V IMO is simply not a credible source seems like mostly fools post there. As far as scootering and misinformation i don't know but would like to hear more. As far as who's is the best, is subjective... Them claiming the torque was lower may be a non issue, if the torque is more then ample, who cares if it has enough torque to be a dump truck...

jgr

I agree 100% with you Jeff. It really is a non issue with me though. Its like comparing a Malossi kit to a Polini kit. One gives you high end power, while the other gives you low end torque. Neither is better than the other, just differant. I would have liked to see a fair and informative article on the attributes and cons of all 3. Not some blatant BS lie about how the Costas weight is a bad thing, and how its really hard to find replacment weights for it.

That said, I still cant wait for the next issue of Scootering to arive at my door. Even if they leave me scratching my head sometimes, the fact is that if you want to see some interesting chops and custom jobs, then Scootering is where its at.

Stats : 16 Replies

Roller weights

Modern : Roller weights

My undestanding of TnG tuning is that you want your variator set up so as to allow your motor to get into the RPM band that your pipe is designed to produce its power at.

There will probably be a little bit of trial and error in getting it right. Some people even mix roller/slider weights to get it
just so.

But my knowledge is limited... there are other people on here who know more about automatics in their little finger than I do entirely.
Yes, I do suffer from dyslexia and that's a burden I've carried for years. I certainly meant no disrespect to anyone on this board. Forgive me, in advance. No harm meant. I'll try to do better.

2003 Yamaha Zuma questions

Modern : 2003 Yamaha Zuma questions

To really see a gain, you're gonna hafta go in for the whole shebang.

But the EASIEST place to start is the top 4: Air in, air out, up-jet, and lighter roller weights.

Those might bump ya up about 2-5%....then, if you really need more, go for the new cylinder kit. But for it to really work effectively I think you hafta swap out the crank, as well.

Modern : New to the Forum--multiple questions

Concerning your engine problems...I had the EXACT same symptoms on my '04 ET4. Now for the bad news - after trying routine semi-easy things like air filter cleaning & spark plug & wire replacement (this was not all that easy considering you have to disconnect the rear shock & jack the bike up to have any hope of getting to the damn thing!), I took the bike in to my friends at Vespa St Louis. This one had them stumped for a long while. Finally they replaced the intake gasket & did some unknown-to-me carb adjustments and disconnected the vacuum hose. These things did solve the starting problem but it still tended to die sometimes when I'd stop at an intersection. The solution to that issue was probably just idle speed adjustment, but while the VSTL folks were stumped I started considering trading up to a GTV, which I ended up doing. So I'd say taking it to their shop or getting in touch with Robert will be best bet. (Or you could do the trade-in thing like I did!) Good luck!

Stats : 7 Replies
